Yes, Google Docs now handles Markdown files directly. Upload a .md or .markdown file to Google Drive and double click it: it opens in Google Docs in Markdown mode, marked by an .md tag next to the title, and it stays an .md file in Drive instead of turning into a Google Doc. You can edit it, comment on it and share it like any other document. Drive can also show a formatted preview of the file without opening Docs at all. Separately, Docs still has its older Markdown tools: typing shortcuts, Paste from Markdown, Copy as Markdown and Download as Markdown.

Google announced native Markdown files in a Workspace Updates post on October 5, 2026, followed it with a longer Google Developers Blog post on October 26, and listed it first in the October Workspace Drops roundup on October 29. This guide covers every Google Docs Markdown option, which one to pick, and what breaks along the way. Every step was checked against Google's own help pages on November 2, 2026. We did not test the feature first hand for this guide.

Why Google Docs Markdown matters now

Markdown is plain text with a few symbols for formatting: # for a heading, ** around bold words, - for a bullet, and brackets for links. Google's own help page describes it as a standard format "widely used by Large Language Models," and that is the practical reason most people meet it today. Ask ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini for a long answer and you often get Markdown back, and tools such as Claude Docs can export a document as a .md file.

Until October, getting that file into Google Docs meant converting it. Google's Workspace post says the old import "often altered formatting, stripped comments, and fragmented files." That's a problem if the file has to go back to a notes app, a website or a code repository as Markdown. The new Markdown mode keeps the file in its original format while you and your colleagues work on it in the Docs editor.

How to open an MD file in Google Docs

These steps come from Google's help page View and edit Markdown (.md) files in Google Docs:

  1. Upload your .md file to Google Drive. Drag it into the Drive window, or click New and then File upload.
  2. Double click the file in Drive.
  3. It opens in Google Docs in Markdown mode. Look for the .md tag next to the document title; that tag is how you know the file was not converted.
  4. Edit the text, add comments or click Share as you would with any Doc.

The important line on that help page: "Your file does not convert to a Google Docs file. It stays an .md file, kept in Drive." Google adds that you can keep your comments and formatting when you reopen the file in Google Docs or in other tools.

There is no setting to switch on. Google says there is no admin control and no user setting for the feature. The rollout began October 5, 2026 for Workspace domains and could take up to 15 days to appear, and Google lists it as available to all Workspace customers and to personal Google accounts. If your file opens as plain text or offers a conversion instead, the rollout may not have reached your account yet, or the file may not end in .md or .markdown.

How to preview Markdown in Google Drive

Sometimes you only want to read the file. Drive now works as a Google Docs Markdown viewer of sorts, showing the formatted version with clickable links and tables:

  1. Open Google Drive and right click the file.
  2. Choose Open with, then Preview.
  3. At the top of the viewer, switch between Markdown (the raw text with symbols) and Preview (the formatted page).
  4. To make changes, open the file in Google Docs instead.

This is handy for checking a README, a set of meeting notes from an AI tool, or a long chatbot answer you saved, without installing a separate Markdown app.

Paste Markdown in Google Docs (and copy it back out)

The older tools covered on Google's help page Use Markdown in Google Docs, Slides, and Drawings are still the fastest route when you don't need an .md file at all, for example when you want a chatbot answer to become a normal Google Doc.

Paste from Markdown. Copy the Markdown text, open a document in Google Docs on your computer, right click and choose Paste from Markdown. Docs converts the symbols into real headings, bold text, lists and links as it pastes.

Copy as Markdown. Select content in a Google Doc, right click and choose Copy as Markdown. This is the reverse trip: write in Docs, then paste clean Markdown into a notes app such as Capacities, a chatbot prompt or a website editor.

Download as Markdown. Click File, then Download, then Markdown (.md). You get a .md copy of a regular Google Doc.

Import as a Google Doc. If you do want a converted Google Doc, click File, then Open, then Upload in Docs and pick the Markdown file. From Drive, upload it, right click, choose Open with and then Google Docs.

If Paste from Markdown or Copy as Markdown is missing from your right click menu, the first thing to rule out is the Enable Markdown preference described in the next section.

Turn on Markdown typing shortcuts

Docs can also format text as you type Markdown. Go to Tools, then Preferences, and tick Enable Markdown. The same setting exists in Google Slides and Google Drawings.

With it on, Google's help page lists these shortcuts:

Type thisYou get
# Heading (one to six number signs, then a space)Heading 1 to Heading 6 (Docs only)
*text* or _text_Italic
**text** or __text__Bold
***text***Bold and italic
~text~Strikethrough
[label](https://example.com)A link

Two details trip people up. You need a space between the number signs and the heading text, and you can't put a space between the bracketed text and the link in parentheses.

Which Google Docs Markdown option should you use?

The right tool depends on where the text has to end up.

Your goalUse this
Keep a .md file as Markdown and edit it with othersUpload to Drive, double click, edit in Markdown mode
Just read a .md fileDrive Open with then Preview
Turn a chatbot answer into a normal DocPaste from Markdown
Send part of a Doc to a Markdown appCopy as Markdown
Make a .md copy of a whole DocFile, Download, Markdown (.md)
Convert a .md file into a Google Doc for goodFile, Open, Upload, or Open with Google Docs
Format faster while typingTools, Preferences, Enable Markdown

A simple rule: if anything downstream (a website, a notes vault, a repository, an AI tool) expects Markdown, use Markdown mode. If the document will live in Google Docs from now on, convert it.

What changes when you edit an .md file in Docs

Markdown is simpler than a Google Doc, so some Docs features can't survive in an .md file. Google's help page names three:

  • Smart chips turn into plain text or links. That includes the people, file, date and place chips you insert by typing @.
  • Web formatting (HTML) becomes plain text.
  • Font colors, highlights and text alignment are removed.

If an edit changes something you wanted to keep, click File, then Version history to restore an earlier version. Google's Developers Blog post adds that version history tracks revisions from both people and AI agents working on the same file, which matters if a tool like Gemini in Docs edits the file alongside you.

Google's help pages describe these steps "on your computer." They don't say whether Markdown mode works in the Docs or Drive mobile apps, so plan on a computer for now.

Google Docs Markdown and your AI tools

The new mode is most useful as a meeting point between chat assistants and the people you work with. A few practical setups:

  • Claude to Docs. If you write in Claude, the export menu in Claude Docs includes Markdown. Upload that .md file to Drive and colleagues can comment on it in Docs while it stays Markdown. If you'd rather keep Claude inside Docs itself, see how to use Claude in Google Docs.
  • Gemini to Docs. The Gemini app can generate Markdown files and, since October 29, edit them in the chat on the web. Our guide to editing files with Gemini explains what works where; upload the result to Drive when it needs comments from other people.
  • ChatGPT answers. For a long ChatGPT answer, Paste from Markdown is the quickest way to get clean headings and lists into a normal Doc.
  • Voice drafts. If you talk through ideas instead of typing, Google Docs Live is a separate new feature; it produces a regular Doc you can later download as Markdown.

Before you paste anything into an AI tool or share a file, remember that comments and sharing work exactly as they do in any Google Doc. Check who has access before you add an AI agent or a new collaborator.

FAQ

Can I open an MD file in Google Docs?

Yes. Upload the .md or .markdown file to Google Drive and double click it. It opens in Google Docs in Markdown mode with an .md tag beside the title, and it stays an .md file in Drive. Google began rolling this out on October 5, 2026 to Workspace and personal accounts.

Does Google Docs support Markdown formatting?

Yes, in several ways. You can turn on Enable Markdown under Tools and then Preferences for typing shortcuts such as # for headings and ** for bold, paste Markdown as formatted text with Paste from Markdown, copy Doc content as Markdown, and download a Doc as a .md file.

What is Google Docs Markdown mode?

It's the editing mode Docs uses for a native .md file. The file isn't converted into a Google Doc, so it keeps its Markdown format for other tools, but you still get comments, sharing, simultaneous editing and version history. Some Docs features, such as smart chips, font colors and alignment, don't carry over.

How do I paste Markdown in Google Docs?

Copy the Markdown text, open a document in Google Docs on a computer, right click and choose Paste from Markdown. Docs converts the symbols into headings, lists, bold text and links. If the option is missing, check that Enable Markdown is ticked under Tools and then Preferences.

Can I preview a Markdown file without opening Docs?

Yes. In Google Drive, right click the file, choose Open with and then Preview, and switch between the Markdown and Preview views at the top of the viewer. Open the file in Docs when you want to edit it.

How do I convert a Google Doc to Markdown?

Open the Doc, click File, then Download, then Markdown (.md). To move only part of a document, select it, right click and choose Copy as Markdown, then paste it wherever you need it.
