Notion AI credits are the monthly allowance that now decides how much Notion AI you can use. Each Business or Enterprise seat gets 1,500 Standard credits a month for work where Notion's Auto router picks the model, plus 500 Select credits a month for work where you pick the model or run your own Custom Agents. Both reset monthly, neither rolls over, and when one runs out the features that use it pause unless your admin lets you continue on paid Notion credits.
Notion announced the system on October 19, 2026. New Business and Enterprise workspaces use it now, and existing workspaces switch on November 2, 2026. One more date matters for anyone who records meetings: AI Meeting Notes starts drawing from Standard credits on December 1, 2026.
How Notion AI credits work
There are three kinds of credit, and they don't mix.
- Standard credits: 1,500 per member per month. They pay for work where Notion picks the model for you, which Notion calls Auto. That covers Notion Agent on Auto (including chat), writing and translation, AI blocks, AI database formulas and inline editing, and from December 1, AI Meeting Notes.
- Select credits: 500 per member per month. They pay for Notion Agent when you choose a model yourself instead of leaving it on Auto, and for Custom Agents you set up for your own use.
- Notion credits: a shared workspace balance that admins buy. They cover usage beyond your Standard or Select allowance (if an admin allows it), Custom Agents funded by the workspace, running an agent through the Notion API or a connected app, and the models Notion labels "high credit consumption", such as Fable and Astra.
According to Notion's guide to managing AI credits, Standard and Select credits belong to each member. You can't pool them across the workspace, move them to a teammate or trade one kind for the other. Notion also notes that the included amount can vary with your plan and purchase arrangement, so check your own number under Settings, Notion AI, Usage.
| Credit type | What it pays for | Included each month | When it runs out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | Auto: Notion Agent on Auto, writing, translation, AI blocks, formulas, AI Meeting Notes (from Dec 1) | 1,500 per member | Those features pause until reset, unless your admin allows Notion credits |
| Select | Notion Agent with a model you pick, your own Custom Agents | 500 per member | Those features pause until reset, unless your admin allows Notion credits |
| Notion credits | Overflow, workspace funded Custom Agents, API and connected app agent runs, high credit consumption models | None included; bought by admins | Admins buy more or change allocation |
Which features use which credits
Notion's eligible features table is the clearest map. In plain terms:
- Notion Agent on Auto uses Standard credits.
- Notion Agent with a model you pick uses Select credits.
- AI editing, page translation, AI blocks and AI database formulas use Standard credits.
- AI Meeting Notes uses Standard credits, starting December 1, 2026.
- Custom Agents use Select credits, or Notion credits when the workspace funds them.
- High credit consumption models only ever use Notion credits, and they stay switched off until a workspace owner or admin turns them on.
- Workers, which is in beta, uses no credits while the beta lasts.
- Database Autofill does not currently reduce your balance.
Two things don't cost credits at all. Everyday read and write actions through Notion MCP and the Notion API are free of credits (normal rate limits still apply), although running an agent through the API or a connected app does use Notion credits. And if you connect a ChatGPT subscription to your personal Notion Agent, that work runs on your ChatGPT plan instead of your Standard and Select credits. More on that below.
How far 1,500 Standard credits go
Notion publishes rough estimates per task, comparing its Auto router with picking Opus 5.5 yourself. Your real numbers will vary with how long the page or thread is.
| Task size | Examples from Notion | Auto, credits per task | Opus 5.5, credits per task |
|---|---|---|---|
| Simple | Polish an email, translate a message, find decisions in meeting notes | 5 | 50 |
| Medium | Write a work report, find a document, summarize a one hour meeting | 10 | 85 |
| Complex | Draft a performance review, build a database, refine a quarterly plan | 25 | 150 |
Some quick math using those estimates (our arithmetic, not Notion's promise):
- On Auto, 1,500 Standard credits is roughly 300 simple tasks, 150 medium tasks or 60 complex tasks in a month.
- Notion estimates a one hour meeting at about 10 Standard credits, so 20 hours of recorded meetings a month would take around 200 of your 1,500 credits once meeting notes start counting in December.
- Select credits drain much faster when you pick a top model. At the Opus 5.5 estimate of 50 credits for a simple task, 500 Select credits covers about 10 simple tasks, or about 3 complex ones.
That last point is the whole design. In its announcement, Notion says that across more than 20 common tasks, Auto gave results similar to Opus 5.5 and Astra at about 90% lower average cost, so credits go about ten times further. It also says the vast majority of users are unlikely to run out. That's Notion's own claim, and the practical takeaway is simple: leave Notion Agent on Auto for everyday writing and lookups, and save picking a model for the few jobs where you can tell the difference.
When do Notion AI credits reset?
Standard and Select credits each reset monthly at the start of your billing cycle, and unused credits don't roll over. Notion warns you inside Notion Agent chat when you are close to running out and again when you have run out.
What happens next depends on which balance is empty:
- Out of Standard: Standard features pause until the reset. Leftover Select credits won't cover them.
- Out of Select: Select features pause. If you still have Standard credits, switch Notion Agent back to Auto and keep working.
- Out of both: you can keep going on Notion credits only if your admin has turned that on and the workspace has a balance.
You can ask an admin for more right from the alert. Admins turn on overflow in Settings, Notion AI, with the toggle "Allow workspace to use Notion credits after AI limit is reached". It is off by default and covers both Standard and Select. Admins then see each member's spending in Settings, Access & billing, Notion credits.
Notion AI credits pricing
Here is what Notion's pricing page and its help article on Notion credits list:
- Free: $0 per member a month, with a trial of Notion AI.
- Plus: $10 per member a month, also with only a trial of Notion AI.
- Business: $20 per member a month, with Notion Agent and AI Meeting Notes, and the 1,500 Standard plus 500 Select monthly credits per seat.
- Enterprise: custom pricing, with the same seat credits.
- Extra Notion credits: $10 per 1,000 credits on monthly billing, or $13 per 1,000 on annual billing.
Monthly extra credits reset each month and don't carry over. You can buy more mid cycle and get the full amount at once (no proration), and admins can raise or lower the amount each month. Annual credits are paid up front, can be used any time in the subscription year and expire at renewal.
Are Notion AI credits free on Free and Plus?
No. The Standard and Select allowance comes with Business and Enterprise seats. Notion's AI FAQ says Free and Plus users get a limited number of complimentary AI responses to try Notion AI, and Notion does not publish the exact number. Students get Plus free with a school email, but that still means the trial only, not the monthly credits.

Custom Agents and who pays
Custom Agents are where credits surprise people, because a shared agent bills its owner. Per Notion's Custom Agents credit guide, an agent spends in this order:
- The owner's Select credits.
- The owner's extra Notion credit allowance, if one is set.
- The workspace's shared Notion credits, if available and an admin allows it.
That means if you build an agent that triages a team inbox and ten colleagues use it, it comes out of your 500 Select credits by default. Owners can set a spending cap on each agent. The better fix for an agent the whole team relies on is to ask an admin to fund it: open the agent, select Credits, then next to Credit source choose Owner allowance, Request workspace credits and suggest a monthly budget.
If the owner's Select credits run out and the workspace has no Notion credits, the agent pauses until the reset. Custom Agents created before November 2, 2026 keep drawing from shared workspace credits.
Use your ChatGPT plan inside Notion
Notion now lets you connect a ChatGPT Plus, Pro or Go plan to your personal Notion Agent, so that work runs on your ChatGPT subscription instead of your Standard and Select credits. It works in your personal Notion Agent only for now, not in Custom Agents. If you already pay for ChatGPT and keep running low on Select credits, this is the cheapest way to get more model choice in Notion.
What changes on November 2 and December 1
- October 19, 2026: new Business and Enterprise workspaces start on the credit system.
- November 2, 2026: existing workspaces move over. Notion says admins get an email with details, and customers whose contract hasn't renewed yet get the same Standard and Select credits, with credits set by plan at renewal.
- December 1, 2026: AI Meeting Notes starts using Standard credits, at roughly 10 credits per hour of meeting.
Notion also says it may change how credits work, including allowance sizes and which features count, and that features which don't use credits today may in the future. Check the help pages before planning a budget.
A simple plan to stay under your limit
- Open Settings, Notion AI, Usage once a week for the first month to see your real burn rate.
- Leave Notion Agent on Auto for drafting, translating and searching. Pick a model only for hard jobs.
- If you record lots of calls, budget for them before December 1. Our guide to Notion AI calendar setup shows how meeting notes attach to Notion Calendar events, and the best AI meeting note takers guide covers standalone options.
- Ask an admin to fund any Custom Agent your team shares so it stops eating your Select credits.
- Connect a ChatGPT plan to your personal agent if you already pay for one.
