ChatGPT Slides is the new presentation editor inside ChatGPT Space. You ask ChatGPT in Work to turn a conversation, an outline or a few files into a deck, then edit it yourself or by asking ChatGPT, share it with teammates, and present it from ChatGPT or export it to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides. It's only on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans with Space access, and it's still rolling out, so some eligible accounts won't see it yet.

OpenAI added Slides to its ChatGPT release notes on October 16, 2026, a little over two weeks after Space itself launched on September 29. This guide covers who can use it, how to build and edit a deck, how sharing and export work, the limits listed in OpenAI's own docs, and what to use instead on Free or Plus. Every step was checked against OpenAI's Slides help article and its Space getting started guide on October 17, 2026.

What ChatGPT Slides is

Slides lives in ChatGPT Space, the shared area where ChatGPT keeps Pages, files, spreadsheets, Sites and now presentations. A deck in Space is a live document, not a file you download once. You, ChatGPT and anyone you share it with work on the same slides at the same time.

That's the big difference from asking a chatbot to spit out a .pptx file. With Slides you can:

  • Start from a conversation, uploaded files, an outline or a template.
  • Edit text, images, shapes, tables and charts by hand.
  • Select a single element and ask ChatGPT to change only that piece.
  • Leave shared comments and @mention ChatGPT, or your dot (OpenAI's always on agent), to make the edits.
  • Present straight from ChatGPT with speaker notes, or export the deck.

If you've tried Claude Slides or Gamma, the idea is familiar: AI drafts the deck and you polish it in a browser editor. What Slides adds is team editing in the same place as your ChatGPT chats, pages and files. Meeting notes saved to Space by the Meetings plugin (see ChatGPT meeting notes) can feed a deck too.

FreeNoChatGPT for PowerPoint, limited usage
GoNoChatGPT for PowerPoint, limited usage
PlusNoChatGPT for PowerPoint, or files made in Work
ProYes, rolling out
BusinessYes, when Space is enabled
EnterpriseYes, when Space is enabled

In plain terms: Slides needs Space, and OpenAI's pricing page lists Space for Pro but not for Free, Go or Plus. Business and Enterprise accounts can get it too, but availability and sharing follow your workspace settings, so an admin may have to turn Space on first. OpenAI's release notes describe Pro tiers at $100 and $200 a month, plus a $500 Pro 500 plan. Check the pricing page before you upgrade, because plan details change often.

The help article also lists two device caveats:

  • Phones. On mobile you can create slides through conversation and view decks, but editing slide elements directly needs the web or the desktop app.
  • Windows. On Windows PCs without a system component OpenAI calls MXC, the desktop app creates and edits ordinary PowerPoint (.pptx) files instead of collaborative Slides. Windows 10 doesn't support that component, and Windows 11 may need an update or approval from your IT team. The workaround is cloud mode or ChatGPT on the web.

How to use ChatGPT Slides, step by step

There are two ways to start a deck. Both end up in the same editor.

Option 1: ask ChatGPT in Work

  1. Open ChatGPT and switch to Work.
  2. Ask for a presentation, a deck or a slide. Say who the audience is, what the deck needs to achieve and roughly how many slides you want.
  3. Attach source files, or run the request inside an existing conversation so ChatGPT can use it.
  4. When ChatGPT finishes, open the editable deck in Space.

OpenAI's sample prompt in the Space guide is a good model. It asks for a quarterly business review of eight slides for a leadership team, built from attached notes and metrics, covering results, risks and decisions needed, styled after an attached deck, with the source numbers preserved and missing information flagged. Those last two instructions do the most work. Telling ChatGPT to keep your numbers exactly and to point out gaps gives you a checklist of what to verify instead of confident filler.

Option 2: start in Space

  1. Open Space in ChatGPT.
  2. Select Create, then Slide.
  3. Choose a blank slide or a template.
  4. Use the prompt bar to have ChatGPT fill in or rework the deck.

Use a template or an example deck

From either Work or Space, you can share an example deck and ask ChatGPT to follow its style and layout. Teams can go further: the help article says you can build your own templates with OpenAI's template-creator and share them by adding them to a team plugin. If your team will make many decks, set this up first.

Editing a deck with ChatGPT

You get two kinds of edits, and you'll use both.

  • Direct edits. Click into text, images, shapes, tables and charts and change them yourself. On the web, the font picker shows the fonts available in your browser. In the desktop app, ChatGPT can use fonts installed on your computer.
  • AI edits. Select one element, choose Request edits and describe the change. For changes across the whole deck, such as shortening the story for an executive audience, type into the prompt bar instead.

ChatGPT can also generate custom images for a slide or work with images you upload. Prompts along these lines, adapted from the examples on OpenAI's Slides feature page, are a good start:

  • "Turn the metrics in this deck into editable charts that show the trend."
  • "Add speaker notes to each slide with talking points and transitions."
  • "Rework this deck so every slide has one clear takeaway."
  • "Update the deck based on my team's comments and keep the formatting consistent."

OpenAI's guidance is to review the text, figures and layout before you share or present, so reread any slide ChatGPT touched.

Sharing and team editing

Open the deck's sharing controls, add people, and give them edit access. Everyone with edit access can work on the slides at the same time. Shared comments let you discuss changes and @mention a colleague, ChatGPT or your dot. Mention ChatGPT in a comment and it makes the requested change.

One limit at launch: OpenAI's help article says comment only access isn't available yet. The feature page mentions view, comment or edit roles, but for now a reviewer either views or edits.

On privacy, OpenAI's Space docs say sharing a page doesn't give anyone access to your private chats or saved memory, but anything written on the page is visible to everyone who can open it. Treat a shared deck the same way. Any figure you put on a slide is visible to every person you share it with.

Presenting and exporting

When the deck is ready, you have three routes:

  • Present from ChatGPT, with speaker notes.
  • Export on the web to PowerPoint (.pptx) to keep editing, to PDF for a read only copy, or to Google Slides to continue there.
  • Open in PowerPoint or Keynote from the desktop app, if those apps are installed. On a Mac you can also show the file in Finder.

OpenAI tells you to open the exported file and check its content and formatting before using it. Take that seriously. Fonts are the first thing to check, since the web editor works with your browser's fonts, then charts and any slide where ChatGPT generated an image.

Is ChatGPT Slides free? Options on Free and Plus

No. Slides needs a Pro, Business or Enterprise plan with Space. If you're on Free, Go or Plus, you still have good routes to a deck:

  • ChatGPT for PowerPoint. This is OpenAI's add-in that runs in a sidebar inside Microsoft PowerPoint. Per the ChatGPT for PowerPoint help article, it's available to Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, Edu and K-12 users. Free and Go get limited usage, and paid plans draw on their agentic usage limit. To install it, open PowerPoint, go to Home, then Add-ins, search for ChatGPT, add it, open it from the ribbon and sign in.
  • Work on Plus. OpenAI's pricing page lists ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile for Plus, and Work can create presentations as files. You won't get the shared Space editor, but you can still go from notes to a downloadable deck.
  • Claude Slides. Claude offers slide artifacts on its free plan with export to PowerPoint. Our Claude Docs, Slides and Design guide walks through it.
  • Dedicated slide makers. Plus AI, Gamma and Microsoft 365 Copilot are compared in our roundup of the best AI tools for PowerPoint.

The PowerPoint add-in has its own limits, which OpenAI lists plainly: generated slides may not match your template perfectly, and some advanced chart, shape and formatting edits are limited or still in development. For important decks, OpenAI suggests duplicating the file before you start so you can roll back.

Put simply, Slides is for building a new deck where your ChatGPT work already lives and refining it with your team and ChatGPT together. The PowerPoint add-in is for people whose company runs on PowerPoint files and templates and who want help inside the app they already use. On Pro you can use both: draft in Slides, export to PowerPoint, then finish with the add-in.

Who should use ChatGPT Slides

  • Pro subscribers who already research and draft in ChatGPT. Slides removes the copy and paste step between a chat and a deck.
  • Business teams that want briefs, pages and presentations in one shared place, with ChatGPT able to make edits from comments.
  • People tied to a strict corporate template. Start with the PowerPoint add-in or Copilot instead, and treat Slides exports as drafts.
  • Students on a budget. Slides is out of reach on Free, so look at the free options in our best AI tools for students guide.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT Slides free?

No. OpenAI says Slides is available on Pro, Business and Enterprise plans with Space access, and the pricing page doesn't include Space on Free, Go or Plus. Free users can try the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in, which has limited usage on the Free plan.

Can ChatGPT make PowerPoints?

Yes. On Pro, Business and Enterprise, ChatGPT Slides can export a deck to PowerPoint (.pptx). On any plan, the ChatGPT for PowerPoint add-in can create and edit slides directly inside PowerPoint, and Work can produce presentation files on plans that include it.

Can I export ChatGPT Slides to Google Slides?

Yes. On the web you can export a deck to PowerPoint, PDF or Google Slides. In the desktop app you can open it in PowerPoint or Keynote if they're installed.

Why don't I see ChatGPT Slides?

It's rolling out gradually to eligible accounts, so it may not have reached yours yet. Also check that you're on Pro, Business or Enterprise, that Space is enabled for your workspace, and on Windows, that you're using cloud mode or the web if the desktop app only makes PowerPoint files.

Can I edit ChatGPT Slides on my phone?

Only partly. On mobile you can create slides through conversation and view decks, but editing individual slide elements needs ChatGPT on the web or the desktop app.

Can people comment on a deck without editing it?

Not yet. OpenAI's help article says comment only access isn't available at launch, so collaborators either view or edit. Anyone with edit access can leave shared comments and @mention ChatGPT to make changes.
