Is ChatGPT free for students? Yes. Anyone can use ChatGPT's Free plan at no cost, with unlimited text chats and limited uploads, images, voice and research. On top of that, eligible US college and graduate students can get four free months of ChatGPT Plus through OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer, but only if they claim it by October 31, 2026.

That deadline is ten days away as this is written, so the offer section comes first. After that, this guide covers what the Free plan actually includes for studying, the small print on the student deal, and how to use ChatGPT for free without running into the limits at the worst moment. Facts were checked against OpenAI's help center, its student offer page and the ChatGPT pricing page on October 21, 2026.

The 2026 Back to School offer: four free months of Plus

OpenAI's Back to School help article sets out the terms. Eligible students get four free monthly billing periods of ChatGPT Plus, including ChatGPT Work and the other Plus features.

Who qualifies

The offer is for current full time and part time college and graduate students at eligible US degree granting institutions. SheerID, the verification company OpenAI uses, decides whether your school and enrollment count. Depending on your school, SheerID may check trusted enrollment records, ask you to sign in through your school's single sign on, or ask for documents.

Your ChatGPT account doesn't need to use your school email. You use your school email with SheerID, while signed in to whichever ChatGPT account should get the four months.

How to claim it

  1. Open the offer page in a web browser or a mobile browser (not the app).
  2. Sign in to the ChatGPT account you want the offer on.
  3. Follow the SheerID prompts to verify your enrollment.
  4. Return to the offer flow and complete activation. If you're starting a new Plus subscription, add a payment method.

Do it soon. Document reviews can take longer than an instant check, and the claim window closes on October 31, 2026.

The small print

  • A payment method is required for a new subscription. You aren't charged during the four free months.
  • It renews at $20 a month after the promotion unless you cancel.
  • Canceling early ends the free months. OpenAI says Plus continues through the end of the current monthly billing period, then any remaining promotional months are forfeited. Don't cancel in month one to be safe; set a reminder before the fourth month ends.
  • App Store and Google Play subscriptions don't qualify while they're billed through the store. You'd have to cancel there, let that period end, then come back and check whether the offer is still open.
  • You can redeem it once.

What the Free plan includes for students

If you don't qualify for the offer, or it's November, the Free plan still covers most coursework. OpenAI's pricing page lists:

  • Unlimited text chats with GPT-6, subject to abuse guardrails
  • Limited messages with uploads, image creation and voice chats
  • Limited deep research
  • Limited memory and context
  • Limited Codex access and limited ChatGPT Work access on desktop

OpenAI's release notes add several study features that are open to every plan, Free included:

  • Flashcards. Ask for flashcards on a topic or upload notes to turn into cards. Tap to flip, mark ones you know, and practice the rest again. They save to your library.
  • Interactive quizzes. Ask ChatGPT to quiz you and answer in the chat. OpenAI lists this for all consumer plans and Edu plans.
  • Think. On the web, Free and Go users can select Think for harder questions that need reasoning.
  • ChatGPT for Word and PowerPoint. The Microsoft add in works on Free, so you can draft from notes or revise a selection inside Word. Plan token limits apply.
  • Scheduled tasks. Free users can keep up to three active tasks, each running at most once a day, which works for a daily study reminder.

What Free doesn't include

Some features students want most are paid only. OpenAI says audio uploads, the feature that turns a recorded lecture into notes, are for paid subscriptions and workspaces. Projects and custom GPTs sit in the Plus tier on the pricing page. Free also has a smaller memory and context allowance, so very long readings may need to be split. And Free storage is 500 MB, according to OpenAI's May 2026 storage update.

Go sits between the two: more messages with tools, more uploads, more images and longer memory, but OpenAI says it may include ads. For most students the choice is simple. Claim the Plus offer if you qualify, then decide in month four whether Free is enough.

How to use ChatGPT for free without hitting limits

The limits on Free mostly bite on uploads, images and long files, not on plain questions. A few habits help:

  • Paste text instead of uploading when you can. Text chats are unlimited; uploads aren't.
  • Split long readings. Free's context window is smaller, so ask about one chapter at a time.
  • Save Think for hard problems. Use it for a proof or a tricky concept, not for rewording a sentence.
  • Turn notes into practice. Flashcards and quizzes are free and do more for exam prep than a summary does.
  • Keep your own notes. Use ChatGPT to test your understanding, not to replace reading. Check facts and citations against your course materials, because AI answers can be wrong.

Free alternatives worth knowing

ChatGPT isn't the only free option for coursework. Google's Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM) answers questions only from sources you upload, which suits reading heavy courses; see how to use NotebookLM for studying. Claude also has a free plan. For editing your own writing, Grammarly has a free tier, compared in Grammarly vs QuillBot. For a full roundup, see the best AI tools for students.

Before using any AI tool on graded work, check your course's policy. Many instructors allow AI for studying but not for writing submitted work.

FAQ

Yes. The Free plan costs nothing for anyone. Eligible US college and graduate students can also get four free months of Plus if they claim OpenAI's offer by October 31, 2026.

Is ChatGPT free to use at all?

Yes. You can sign up for the Free plan without paying. It includes unlimited text chats, subject to abuse guardrails, with limits on uploads, images, voice and deep research.
