Is Perplexity free for students? Partly. Any student can use Perplexity's Free plan at no cost, with practically unlimited basic searches, citations in every answer and a small daily allowance of Pro Searches. Perplexity Pro is not free for students in November 2026: verified students and educators get it as Education Pro for $10 a month, half the regular $20 monthly Pro price.

That answer surprises people who remember the free Pro deals Perplexity ran for students in earlier years. Those programs have ended. This guide covers what the Free plan actually gives you for coursework, what Education Pro adds, how the SheerID check works, and how to get the most out of Perplexity without paying. Facts were checked on November 5, 2026 against Perplexity's plan comparison in its help center, its student page and its pricing page.

The short answer by situation

Your situationWhat you payWhat you get
Any student$0Free (Standard) plan: basic searches, citations, 3 Pro Searches a day, 1 Research query a month
Verified student or educator$10 a monthEducation Pro: everything in Pro, plus Learn Mode and education tips
Not verified, wants Pro$20 a month, or $200 a yearPro: extended Pro Search, advanced models, Perplexity Computer, file and image tools
Heavy research user$200 a month, or $2,000 a yearMax: the highest limits and early access to new features

For most students the Free plan covers everyday questions. Education Pro is worth paying for only if you keep running out of Pro Searches or you want the study features that come with it.

Is Perplexity free for students? What the Free plan includes

Perplexity calls its free tier the Standard plan. According to the help center plan guide, it includes search history, practically unlimited basic searches, a very limited number of Pro Searches, automatic model choice ("we pick the best model to use for your query") and basic, limited file uploads. It does not include access to the advanced AI models, image generation or premium support.

The same guide spells out the numbers in a comparison table. The Free plan gets 3 Pro Searches a day and 1 Research query a month. Browser agent queries through Comet Assistant, file and app creation, and image generation are listed as not included. Pro and Education Pro instead have weekly limits on Pro Searches and monthly limits on Research, described as "average use."

Perplexity's pricing page describes Free as "search only with accurate answers and citations" and says it is good for limited daily usage and simple questions. Its FAQ adds that Pro raises every limit and adds Perplexity Computer, premium data sources and the ability to pick a preferred model for each question.

What that means for coursework

A basic search is enough for most study questions: defining a term, getting a quick overview of a topic, or finding a few starting sources. The citations matter here. Every answer links to the pages it drew on, so you can open them and check whether they really say what the summary claims. Pro Searches go further on harder questions, and with only three a day, it pays to save them for the questions where a basic answer falls short.

One Research query a month is the tightest limit. Research mode builds a longer report from many sources. If your course needs that kind of report every week, the Free plan will not keep up.

Education Pro: the Perplexity student discount

Education Pro is the only student pricing Perplexity offers right now. The student page says to sign in or sign up with any email and verify your student status to get Pro for $10 a month. The plan guide lists it as "$10/mo with verification from SheerID."

According to the help center, Education Pro is offered to verified students and educators at a discount and includes everything in Pro: access to Perplexity Computer, access to Learn Mode, unlimited Pro Searches, file and image uploads, and premium models, plus education specific tips and nudges. The plan comparison table lists the education discount as applied automatically once you are verified. (The help text says unlimited Pro Searches, while the comparison table shows weekly limits, the same as Pro, so expect a cap if you use it very heavily.)

What Learn Mode adds

Learn Mode is the feature built for studying. Perplexity's Learn Mode help article says it explains an answer step by step instead of just handing it to you, and it can generate study material from your courses and notes inside the session: interactive free response exercises, flashcards and multiple choice quizzes. The same article says the Learn toggle currently appears only on accounts that have verified student status.

If flashcards are the main thing you want, you have free options too. Our guide on how to make flashcards with AI walks through them.

How Education Pro compares with regular Pro

At $10 a month, Education Pro costs half the $20 monthly Pro price. Perplexity's pricing page shows Pro at $17 a month when billed annually, which works out to $200 a year. Over twelve months that is $120 for a verified student against $200 for annual Pro or $240 for monthly Pro. Perplexity does not say on these pages whether the $10 rate also comes with an annual option, so check the price at checkout.

How to verify as a student

Perplexity uses SheerID, a third party verification service, to confirm that you are a student. Its student verification help article covers the steps:

  1. Sign up at perplexity.ai with any email. A school email is not required; a personal one works.
  2. In the app, click Upgrade in the bottom left corner.
  3. Toggle to the Education plan and click Verify as student.
  4. Complete the SheerID check, then subscribe at the discounted price.

A few details from the same help article are useful before you start:

  • Your school isn't listed: you can ask SheerID to add your institution.
  • A VPN error when you aren't using a VPN: clear your browser cache and try again, then contact SheerID if it keeps happening.
  • Changing your email later: student discounts don't transfer. Moving to a new email means verifying with SheerID again.
  • Comet: students can get Perplexity's Comet browser through a dedicated student page, which Perplexity now titles "Get Comet with discounted Perplexity Pro."

What happened to free Perplexity Pro for students

Perplexity used to run campaigns that gave students Pro for free, including a referral program where students earned free months by inviting classmates. Those are gone. Perplexity's partner promotions and referral programs page says the Student Referrals program has been discontinued, the general "Give a month, Get a month" referral program ended on October 6, 2025, and the Comet referral program ended on November 6, 2025.

So if a coupon site or video promises a free year of Perplexity Pro for students, treat it with caution and confirm it on Perplexity's own pages first. The $10 Education Pro plan is the student offer Perplexity lists today.

How to use Perplexity for free as a student

You can get a lot done on the Free plan if you plan around its limits.

  • Use basic search for most questions. It is practically unlimited, and it still shows citations.
  • Save your three daily Pro Searches for questions that need more digging, such as comparing two theories or finding recent sources on a narrow topic.
  • Plan your one Research query for the month's biggest assignment rather than spending it on a quick question.
  • Open the sources. Perplexity summarizes web pages, and summaries can be wrong. For academic work, find the original paper. Our guide on whether Semantic Scholar is reliable shows a free way to check that a paper exists and what it says.
  • Try the free browser. Comet, Perplexity's AI browser, is free to download, and our best AI browser guide covers what you get without paying.
  • Follow your course policy. Many instructors allow AI for research and studying but not for writing submitted work. Cite the sources you actually read, not the AI summary.

Free alternatives for students

If the Free plan's limits are too tight and $10 a month is more than you want to spend, compare these before you pay.

  • Google AI Pro, free for a year: Google's Gemini for Students page offers a free year of Google AI Pro to eligible US college students aged 18 or older, with redemption open until December 31, 2026. You need a valid payment method at sign up, and it renews automatically at $19.99 a month after the free year unless you cancel. Eligibility has to be verified each year.
  • Gemini Notebook (NotebookLM): Gemini Notebook answers only from the sources you upload, which suits reading heavy courses. See how to use NotebookLM for studying.
  • ChatGPT Free: OpenAI's four month student offer closed on October 31, 2026, but ChatGPT still has a Free plan. Our guide on whether ChatGPT is free for students explains its limits.
  • Academic search tools: for papers rather than web pages, tools like Consensus and Elicit are built around research literature. Our list of the best AI tools for research paper writing shows how to combine them.

Should a student pay for Education Pro?

Stay on the Free plan if you mostly ask quick questions, check facts and look for starting sources. Basic search with citations handles that, and three Pro Searches a day covers the occasional hard question.

Consider Education Pro if you hit the Pro Search limit most days, need more than one Research report a month, upload lots of readings, or want Learn Mode's quizzes and flashcards inside Perplexity. At $10 a month it is one of the cheaper paid AI plans for students, but compare it with Google's free year first if you are an eligible US college student, since that offer costs nothing until it renews.
